I've had the opportunity to run armored fighting at a few events. I approach planning fighting at events the same way I do for practices, but taking into account the schedule of the day and making sure I have marshals and ushers for inspections and authorizations.
The first event I ever was the armored marshal in charge for was Althing on July 14, 2018. It was an event that Anglesey hosted for the Kingdom at one of member's property's in Purcellville, VA. We had almost 100 attendees, both heavy and rapier fighting, and got lots and lots of pre-Pennsic authorizations under our belt, including 11 siege authorizations! I was very pregnant at this event! The scenarios:
Best 3/5 single death melees.
God Save the King/Queen - basically like Kill the King except run for time. Each team gets a chance defending their monarch. Whoever kills the monarch in the shortest amount of time, wins. We ran this scenario twice, so a total of 4 single death battlers.
Treasure Hunt - Very similar to Sir Arunedoor's sheep scenario, but instead of sheep, bags of gold and except for pens, treasure chests. This was ran as an unlimited 5 minute rez.
3 Lives/2 Resurrections Pond Battle - ponds made out of ropes create a limited front.
The second event I ever was the armored marshal in charge for was Victory on the Vine I on June 15, 2024. This was the first time we had an SCA event at Mountain Run Winery, which is now a go-to event site for SCA events. I was excited to plan fighting scenarios for this site with plenty of open space. But, I was mostly thrilled to take advantage of the local steel fighting group’s permanent lyst structure already in place and made available to us. Thank you for sharing, Iron Lions! Scenarios:
Warlord tournament for the Titan Challenge. I tried to incorporate this as melee and do a warlord tournament, but it didn't go quite as I had hoped. Oh well!
5 single death, open field battles.
10-minute unlimited resurrection control-the-flag battle. Fighters had to control the “candy cane” centered in the middle of the field which had red and blue pulley flags. With each side getting their own timekeeper, the team with the most time controlling their color on the flag won.
Two 5-minute unlimited resurrection battles that mimicked the town/cathedral battle that year's Pennsic. In the center of the “fortress” was a baton with a red end and a blue end. Two timekeepers kept track of which side held the baton the longest.
Training for the 10v10 Unbelt Tournament at Pennsic. The sides were Knights plus others versus the rest of the Unbelts in 3 single death, open field battles.
Pick-ups.
I ran the armored fighting for Victory on the Vine again on May 17, 2025. This time, the winery's owner, David, allowed us to use hay bales already on site to create obstacles and fighting fronts for our scenarios.
The 1st set of scenarios was to attack/defend the lyst (the “Fortress”) for fastest time. Defenders got 2 lives/1 resurrection and attackers got 4 lives/3 resurrections. These bouts ran around 3 to 4 minutes.
The 2nd set of scenarios was a variation of the prior, except that attackers received unlimited resurrections for the first 45 seconds and then resurrections stopped, while defenders had no resurrections. Attackers also got combat archers. The bouts only lasted a little over a minute and teams were only 1 second apart in time!
The 3rd et of scenarios was a “City Attack” progressive battle that was a scaled down version of the proposed Thursday armored battle the upcoming Pennsic. This was another “attack/defend” scenario for fastest time whereby attackers had to go through a breach in a wall and were given 3 flags to plant inside the city - within each of 2 buildings (hay bale squares) and one inside the Fortress. When the attacking team planted a flag inside a building, the defenders lost that building as a resurrection point. Once both buildings were taken, the defenders got one last resurrection inside the Fortress where the attackers had to plant the last flag. Combat archery was on the attacking team only due to orientation.
The 4th set of scenarios was 2 unlimited resurrection bridge battles where the victory condition was to control the center of the bridge at a time check somewhere between 3 and 5 minutes (they were actually at 4 minutes and 4:20, respectively). Both teams had the benefit for CA.
The 5th set of scenarios was a room-to-room progressive attack/defend battle I like to refer to as “Only Murders in the Building”. This is a scenario that Sir Jonathas Reinisch created a month earlier at Revenge of the Stitch. Attackers had unlimited resurrections and had to clear 4 rooms of defenders, going room-by-room. When a defender died, they moved to the next room. The attackers could not attack the next room until the prior room was cleared. In the last room, the attackers had to kill a defender who was designated as the “king” (complete with a glitter tape crown!) as the victory condition.
The Co-Captains of Atlantian Unbelt Team ran 2 single death open field battles where all of the unbelts attending Pennsic were teamed up on one side in preparation for the 10-Warrior Tournament this upcoming Pennsic. Pick-ups closed out the armored fighting for the day.
